Layering with Light

Using light to create a mood in a room means more than just installing a dimmer on your overhead fixtures. Wesley-Wayne’s designers know that lighting a room is part art and part science – and it is an integral part of our work. Often using a combination of overhead lighting, hanging fixtures, table lamps, floor lamps, and accent lights on art and accessories, lighting is included in an overall design plan from the very beginning to be sure everything coalesces into a beautiful atmosphere.

Some tips on layering light:

  • Always start with ambient light, which is the light you need to be able to move around the room. It can come from recessed lighting, or from wall-mounted or hanging fixtures.
  • Accent lighting puts a spotlight on the things you want to highlight – whether it is art, furniture or a physical feature like a fireplace. Accent lighting can be provided by wall-mounted sconces, chandeliers, recessed lights or strategically positioned lamps.
  • Task lighting helps you to see clearly when you are doing practical activities such as reading, working, cooking, grooming, etc. Task lighting shines light directly where you need it.
  • Don’t forget to take into account the amount of natural light a room receives; not just daylight, but any light from outside the home, such as a streetlight, or any natural barrier to light, such as large trees.
